Seventh grader Grace Jahn and fourth grader Jesus “Chuy” Lopez will compete in the Regional Spelling Bee in Odessa next month after
winning the spelling bees at their respective campuses last week.
A win in Odessa will put the top spellers on the road to Washington,
DC, for the National Spelling Bee.
In junior high action, Jalen Chriesman took second place and Daniel Luevano was third.
Other
participants in sixth to eighth grades included Chris Birkenfeld, Joseph Carrasco, Memory Colston and Cassie Woosley.
Nine students
from third to fifth grades spelled more than 120 words at the elementary spelling bee.
Chuy won after a strong final round
with fellow classmate Luke Carroll. Chuy and Luke both received a subscription to the Encyclopedia Britannica online.
Other elementary
participants included Noah Aguilar, Jacob Bon, Justin Flax, Buddy Imboden, Noah Marquez, Wyatt Mills and Mikie Shoemaker.
Jill Jahn
organized the spelling bees, Pam Deaton pronounced the words and Suzie Grusendorf was the judge. Kristy Carroll pronounced the words
for the Junior High competition.
“All of the competitors did a wonderful job and we are proud of each one of them,” Elementary Assistant
Principal Tanna Lowrance said of the students.
Elementary kids elect‘Bluebonnet’ books
By BLAKENEY CHRIESMAN
Sanderson Elementary students choose the book “Martina the Beautiful Cockroach”
by Carmen Agra Deedy as their favorite Texas Bluebonnet book for 2009-10.
Justin Flax and Luke Carroll read the most Texas Bluebonnet
books this year.
There were 23 students eligible to vote because they had read five books from the Bluebonnet reading list.
In the
fifth grade Cody Hilton, Andrew Hines, Kenny-Mae Pacheco, Mikey Shoemaker and Kira Smith cast votes.
In the fourth grade, eligible
voters were Noah Aguilar, Jacob Bon, Lauryn Carroll, Luke Carroll, Chris Ibarra, Buddy Imboden, Chuy Lopez, Sean Lopez, Stefanie Lozano,
Noah Marquez, Daniel Rodriguez and Hunter Trusedell.
Third grade voters included Elijah Carrasco, Lexie Coe, Kailey Dominguez,
Justin Flax, Wyatt Mills and Otto Turner.
The students had Texas Star brownies and Kool-aid jammers for their refreshments at the party.
A Century of school days
Sanderson Elementary students celebrated the 100th Day of School on Thursday.
The students were surprised
when they came to school to see the hallways decorated with balloons, and enjoyed many different activities in celebration of the
100th school day.
Students began the day by blowing out 100 candles on a large cake baked by Paula Montalvo.
The students tried
to guess what teachers’ ages would add up to 100. One student from each grade took a guess, but only Morgan Campbell in Pre
K got it right.
He correctly guessed the sum of Assistant Principal Tanna Lowrance and Art Teacher Sandy Breckenridge’s ages
would equal 100.
Students also took turns going to Lowrance’s office to try and grab exactly 100 pennies from a jar. For any
student who was able to grab exactly 100 pennies in one try, Lowrance would give them a dollar bill.
No one was able to accomplish
the task, although several came close.
Students also guessed whether it would take 100 ice cubes longer to melt inside or outside. They tried to guess which candy jar had exactly 100 pieces of candy.
Librarian Pam Deaton celebrated by reading to the students and
playing guessing games with them. She also counted the canned goods students had been collecting for our local Food Bank. The students collected 127 cans and are excited about giving to the community of Sanderson.
Mrs. Hamilton purchased pencils, bookmarks, and tattoos for the students to enjoy, and at the end of the day each student went home
with one of the balloons for a souvenir.
The students had a fun and learning-filled day. Each teacher planned 100th Day activities
for their own classes to keep the theme going all day long.
Darren, Blakeney
elected prom king and queen
By BLAKENEY CHRIESMAN
Darren Seidel is this year’s prom king and I was crowned queen at
the festivities Saturday night at St. James Hall.
This year’s junior class chose the theme “From Dust ‘til Dawn.” Attendees
agreed the 2010 banquet and prom was a great success.
Photographer Tyler Lackey, a talented student at San Saba High School,
took pictures from 6 to 7 p.m. Tyler has his own photography company called WTL Photography.
The banquet began at 7 p.m. with catering
services provided by Escamilla Catering of Del Rio. Diners enjoyed salad, chicken Alfredo, garlic bread and topped off with
an assortment of cheesecakes.
Sophomore servers were Javier Garcia, Ashley Hagelgans, Joseph Hopkins and Brittney Pacheco.
The
dance began at 8:45 with music by DJ Boyd of Odessa. Everyone had a great time dancing the night away except for a brief break at
11 p.m. with the annual crowning of the prom king and queen.
A special thanks to the junior class for making the seniors’ last
prom a night that we will remember forever.
