Vet bills pass US House

WASHINGTON, DC – The US House has unanimously passed three bills designed to improve benefits and services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Two weeks ago, the Sanderson American Legion post joined veterans across the country to oppose a plan by President Obama to force private insurance carriers to pay for treatment of service-related injuries and illnesses.

Obama later withdrew his proposal.

US Rep. Ciro Rodriguez of Texas, a member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, said the bills will help rural veterans far from veteran facilities, homeless veterans and veterans’ families with the passage of the Cost-of-Living Adjustment, which he sponsored last year.

“We must always be focused on keeping the promises we make to our veterans when they serve,” Rodriguez said.  “But in these difficult economic times, it is even more important not to lose sight of giving a boost to those who committed to protecting our nation.

“These bills will help veterans receive important medical care, get some back on their feet and help some deservedly stay on their feet.”

This past week, I read one of the funniest books that I have read in a long time.

The humor woven into it most often takes the form of either irony or sarcasm but please do not misunderstand.

This is not a negative or pessimistic book. Instead, the “Ivy Chronicles,” written by first-time novelist Karen Quinn, is an ingenious work of fiction which entertains and warms the heart as well as making the reader laugh out loud numerous times.

The book’s main character Ivy Ames is a bank executive with a husband, two children, a dog and a toney Park Avenue apartment.        Read more...
