WASHINGTON, DC – The US House has unanimously passed three bills designed to improve benefits and services provided by the Department
of Veterans Affairs.
Two weeks ago, the Sanderson American Legion post joined veterans across the country to oppose a plan by President
Obama to force private insurance carriers to pay for treatment of service-related injuries and illnesses.
Obama later withdrew his
proposal.
US Rep. Ciro Rodriguez of Texas, a member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, said the bills will help rural veterans
far from veteran facilities, homeless veterans and veterans’ families with the passage of the Cost-of-Living Adjustment, which he
sponsored last year.
“We must always be focused on keeping the promises we make to our veterans when they serve,” Rodriguez said.
“But in these difficult economic times, it is even more important not to lose sight of giving a boost to those who committed to protecting
our nation.
“These bills will help veterans receive important medical care, get some back on their feet and help some deservedly stay on their feet.”

Edward Gonzales carded a 53 in the Clint Golf Tournament here last month.
The other three team members ended up almost neck-in-neck as Cito Hernandez shot 73, Jerek Lara carded 74 and Omar Grano shot 76.

SANDERSON – The maximum complement of 160 race crews plus 18 alternates had signed up for the Big Bend Open

Sanderson Volunteer Coordinator Dale Carruthers told the Chamber of Commerce Tuesday a total of 160 cars will compete for the race from Fort Stockton to Sanderson and back.

FAIRFAX, VA— The Americans for Limited Government has condemned US Rep. Ciro Rodriguez for voting in favor
of amendments to President Obama’s national service bill that “allows radical front groups to use $5.7 billion in taxpayer money to

ALPINE – A fierce north wind whirled about the crowd at the revived Murphy
Street establishments here Friday as people, undaunted, roamed the shops and sidewalks taking in the south side art and food.
Alpine artist Juliana Johnson, who previously lived in Houston and Goiania, Brazil, opened with her big open-air art at the newly renovated Murphy Street Raspa Company that anchors Fifth and Murphy Street.

also ran the 4 X 100 relay with Edward Gonzales, Zach Gonzales and Cito Hernandez. The team ran the race in 49.30.
CENTURY SITE – Workers are at work on a site for the Century Plant 27 miles southeast of Fort Stockton near US 285 and Puckett Road.
G.R. Birdwell Construction of Houston is leveling about 300 acres and the Century Plant will occupy about half that. The work can
be seen from 285 from just south of Puckett Road to as far south as the Cerf Ranch. A $1.1 billion joint venture by SandRidge Energy
of Oklahoma City and Oxy Petroleum of Los Angeles will separate carbon dioxide from natural gas.
70 YEARS AGO – Frank Adams of Mesquite points out his father Berdine Adams in a 1938 picture donated to the
Sul Ross State University Centennial School. The elder Adams was with a group of cavalry troops from Fort Ringgold in Rio Grande City
on maneuvers just west of the current Jackson Field in Alpine.
BIG SHOT – Micole Calzada of Sanderson displayed a Sharps Rifle he won in the drawing at the Big Bend Area Law Enforcement Officers
Association last month. The raffle was a fund raiser for the West Texas Fallen Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, a project to be
placed on the grounds of Sul Ross State University at Alpine. The gun was a USA Shooting Team 1874 45/70 Creedmore Sharps Rifle.
TREES, MISTER? – Sanderson Boy Scout Hunter Truesdell encouraged shoppers to stop by at a tree sale at The Tumbleweed Co. Saturday.
The scouts collected more than $500 at the sale, enough to buy official Boy Scout shirts and handbooks. They sold out Saturday but
can still take orders for trees to be delivered later.
SAYS IT ALL – Handwritten notes left on the door of their home tell it all. Paul, Beth and Ella Peterson had to leave Marathon to
return to Austin. They say they’ll miss Marathon and Marathon will miss them. Paul was chef at the Gage Hotel.
Prof expresses views about poetry
ALPINE – Sul Ross State University English Professor Dr. Nelson Sager plans to borrow a
line from the Movie “Gone with the Wind” at the 2009 Arts and Sciences Spring Lecture Wednesday, April 15.
Sager’s talk will be titled, “Frankly, Mr. Poet, I Don’t Give a Damn.”

ALPINE – The board of directors of the Big Bend Regional Hospital District last
week approved an affiliation agreement between the district and the operators of the Big Bend Regional Medical Center Community Health
Systems to help finance the Indigent Healthcare Program in Brewster and Presidio County.
Recognizing the losses hospitals incur providing health care for indigent patients, the federal and state governments have instituted a new program called Medicaid Upper Payment Limit to help hospitals offset the losses.

written by first-time novelist Karen Quinn, is an ingenious work of fiction which entertains and warms the heart as well as making
the reader laugh out loud numerous times.
The book’s main character Ivy Ames is a bank executive with a husband, two children, a dog and a toney Park Avenue apartment.

natural oasis during Open Preserve Weekend at Independence Creek Preserve April 17 to 19.
The event is free, although advance registration and reservations for camping are required by Monday, April 6.
