SANDERSON – The Big Bend Open Road Race, an event that bills itself as “the most challenging open road race in the world,” is tomorrow
between here and Fort Stockton.
At press time, there were only two cars in the unlimited class in which drivers compete for the overall
top speed. Both are vintage cars more than 40 years old, both entered by race veterans.
Charlie Friend of Alamogordo, NM, is
driving his unlikely 1965 Chevrolet Corvair and Joel Hannig of Silver City, NM, will race his 1962 Dodge Polara.
To set a new course
record, Friend or Hannig will have to top an average speed of 172.584 mph set by Mike and Marsha Borders of Las Vegas, NV, in the
2007 race.
In all other classes, drivers compete not for top speed but how close they can come to the “target” speed for their class,
from 85 miles per hour to 155 mph.
The slate of more than 160 race cars includes many Chevrolet Corvettes, Porches, Ford Mustangs,
a couple of Ferraris and a Lamborghini.
One of the more interesting cars this year is the second running of the “Monster Car,” a 1964
Lincoln Continental heavily modified by the Discover Channel program “Monster Garage.”
Show host Jesse James and “five noted racers and builders” created the car, driver Dave Cudd of Montgomery told the News Leader.
