SANDERSON – The opening date of the Nopalito Market is set for the Labor Day weekend, September
3, 4 and 5.
The committee discussed the road ahead and getting the market “off the ground” last week.
At the meeting with me were Dale
Carruthers, Donna Muñiz, Michelle Marquez and Shellie Martin,
We envision the market as a monthly affair offering art, crafts, food,
furniture and other items.
It is designed to cause some of the 3,000 vehicles that pass through each day to stop and look around –
and maybe spend a few dollars.
Vendor booths will be set up along Oak Street, or US Highway 90, through town.
The first market date
in September will include a contest for foods made from cactus.
Contestants will be asked to prepare a main dish, side dish or dessert
which contains cactus – preferably varieties found in and around Sanderson.
There will be a $15 fee for entering the contest and that
fee will be used to purchase gift certificates for the winners.
First place will be awarded a $20 gift card to a local business. Second
place will receive a gift basket and third place will receive flowers, all from local businesses.
