SANDERSON – Work under the May, 2008, $14 million bond issue for Terrell County Schools will move another $3 million closer to completion
after school board action Monday.
The board awarded contracts totaling $2,961,407 to numerous subcontractors working under “Construction
Manager at Risk” Mid-Tex of Midland for work on the elementary school and the new and old gyms at the high school building.
Work on
a new reduced-scope field house will be able to proceed “pretty quick, now what we know” what the other work would cost, Architect
Monte Hunter told the board.
Hunter, of Hunter Corral Associates of Midland, is the architect on the total bond project and Mid Tex
was selected as the “construction manager at risk,” coordinating hundreds of smaller jobs into a unified whole.
School Board President
Ada Lee Robbins noted the projects awarded this week are about $600,000 under the bond budget of $3,569,000 set aside for the work.
“You
might be able to buy some kitchen equipment,” Hunter said.
Robbins said a remodeling of the kitchen in the high school cafeteria could
come to $200,000 to $250,000.
Superintendent Gary Hamilton said the equipment, including new dishwasher and walk-in freezer and refrigerator
could come in for less than that but Robbins said she would rather estimate high and “pleasantly be surprised” if the cost came in
at a lower amount.

SHEFFIELD – Because of a punishing drought and ground-water pumping, the
handful of streams and rivers winding through the creosote of the Chihuahuan Desert’s northern reaches in West Texas are having a
tougher time finding the freshwater sources they need to make their way south.
Independence Creek, a strong, spring-fed water source,
has helped the Pecos River push through its limestone banks for thousands of years.
To help permanently protect one of the few remaining freshwater tributaries of the lower Pecos, The Nature Conservancy entered into a conservation agreement in 1991 that set aside 702 acres of watershed to protect the creek.
