SANDERSON – The last $4.5 million of a $14 million bond issue to finance new facilities for Terrell County Independent School District will be offered for sale by the Aug. 17 board meeting, it was decided Monday.

The board sold the first $9.5 million last fall and proceeds have been committed for new high school classrooms, a new vocational building, improvements to the elementary building and gyms and other work.

A new field house should go to contract later this summer.

Renovation of the 1931 high school building and auditorium will be the only projects that will not have gone to contract by the sale date, Business Manager Blain Chriesman said.

Like the earlier sale, this will be a private placement under a financial services contract with First Southwest Company of Dallas.

Meanwhile, work was moving ahead slowly on the high school classrooms being added onto the south of the current junior high school building.

An overlay will be placed on the cement floor because the finish was not of the quality needed to give a “polished concrete” surface, Superintendent Gary Hamilton said.

AAU athletes all win medals

EL PASO – All four Sanderson entrants in the Amateur Athletic Union District Qualifier Track Meet here brought home medals last week.

History fair nets honor for teacher

Fourth party grows

SANDERSON – The popular band “Terrell County Bs” will play in a “jam session” in front of Sanderson High School the evening of Friday, July 3, extending the annual Independence Day observance in Sanderson by a few hours.

Sanderson School Band Director Eric Cooksey, who was instrumental in getting the El Paso band Texas Alibi to play for the annual street dance Saturday night, July 4, told the Chamber of Commerce Tuesday, the “Bs” will play for community entertainment on the bandstand Friday night.    Read more...

‘Project’ back under school

SANDERSON – The Terrell County School Board voted Monday night to take over the annual “Project Graduation,” an all-night, chemical-free party after graduation each year.

A small group of parents of the 2009 graduation class decided to operate outside the purview of the school and to use the IRS tax-exempt number of Cactus Health Services for its money-raising activities.    Read more...

School mulls ‘recapture’ bonds

SANDERSON – An issue of “voter approved” bonds for the sole purpose of reducing the amount of money Terrell County schools have to send to other districts will be offered in a future election.

The School Board Monday night agreed to ask First Southwest Company of Dallas to study two scenarios for consideration, a $1.6 million issue and a $2 million issue.     Read more...

Cost of lunch going up

SANDERSON – The cost of a meal in the school cafeterias here went up by two bits for the school year beginning this fall.

The Terrell County School Board agreed to raise the cost of breakfast from 80 cents to $1 and lunch from $1.50 to $1.75 at the Elementary School and from $1 to 1.25 and $1.75 to $2 for secondary schools.     Read more...

Solar plant seen in W. Texas

HOUSTON – A solar-energy plant somewhere in West Texas could be a reality in the near future.

Tessera Solar of Houston and CPS Energy of San Antonio announced Tuesday they have signed a 20-year agreement to develop a 27-megawatt solar project using the SuncatcherTM power system made by Tessera Solar’s sister company, Stirling Energy Systems of Scottsdale, AZ.    Read more...

‘All Stars’ lose three close ones

OZONA – The Sanderson All Star team lost all three games at a tournament here last week but their coach praised the team’s efforts.

The McCamey Badgers downed the Eagles 8-6 Wednesday, June 17, “in a very exciting game,” Coach Lay Lozano said. “Sanderson hit the ball good against the Badgers and played very good defense.”     Read more...

MARATHON – The Summer Reading program continued this week at the Marathon Public Library with Arlene Griffis reading “The Armadillo from Amarillo” by Lynn Cherry as the children colored pictures of armadillos.

SANDERSON – The success of Sanderson students at this year’s History Fair has prompted the Texas State Historical Association to honor David Carrasco as “one of the top history teachers in the state of Texas.”

Out of the 24 Sanderson students who participated in this year’s History Fair, 21 went to the state final in May.     Read more...

‘Sales tax holiday’ items added

AUSTIN – The annual sales tax holiday, designed to give families a break in getting ready for a new school year, has grown to include new eligible items.

For the first time since it began in 1999, the annual August sales tax holiday will include many school supplies.

“A lot of families look forward to saving their hard- earned money during the sales tax holiday weekend,” Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said.  “Now they can make their back-to-school budgets stretch even further because more than two dozen school supply items will be tax free.”      Read more...

Dam capacity at third

EL PASO – Water storage in the two Rio Grande Project reservoirs, Elephant Butte and Caballo, 120 miles north of El Paso, is 730,402 acre-feet or 33 percent of the total combined capacity. 

Out of this quantity, 22.8 percent, is owed to upstream users under the Rio Grande Compact between Colorado, New Mexico and Texas and to San Juan-Chama Project users and is unavailable for Rio Grande Project users.       Read more...

SANDERSON – Strict enforcement of state laws prohibiting hunting of reptiles along public roads is driving visitors away – along with the revenue they bring with them – the Chamber of Commerce was told Tuesday.

Ruth Engeldorf, who owns the Outback Oasis Motel with husband Roy, said “harassment” of people trying to see and photograph reptiles in the county is driving them away.

“And they are not coming back,” added Sharon Wolfe, owner of the Round House Restaurant.     Read more...

VBS brings 36 students

SANDERSON – Vacation Bible School brought in 36 students in a “Truth Trek” last week.

The motto of the week was “God’s truth. Dig it – live it.”

DEBRIS FIELD – Significant rain over the weekend officially dumped about 2.5 inches on rain in Sanderson, though some rain gauges recorded significantly more. US Highway 285 about 12 miles north of Sanderson was littered with debris from a much heavier storm. It was eerily similar to debris fields from damaging rains in September that washed out bridge approaches on State Highway 349 in east Terrell County.

NEW FIELD HOUSE – The Terrell County School Board has selected a final design for a new field house to be built just east of the football field at Eagle Stadium. The existing concession stand, which was to be removed to make way for the facility, will remain in place while the new structure is built. The new plan is for a 5,095-square-foot building, reduced from a 7,748-square-foot design presented by architect Monte Hunter, estimated to cost $1.7 million. The new, reduced building should be ready to go to contract in four to six weeks.  

TOP TEACH – Sanderson history teacher and school Technology Director David Carrasco was recognized by the Texas State Historical Association as “one of the top history teachers in the State of Texas.” The citation notes student involvement from Sanderson has tripled since Carrasco became involved and this year 21 of the 24 students entered went to the state finals in Austin last month.

ARMADILLO ON YOUR ARM – Giana Gonzales showed off her “Bracelet Armadillo" at the Marathon Public Library this week. Steve Griffis showed the kids how to make armadillo armbands and Arlene Griffis read the “Armadillo from Amarillo.”

All-night run targets cancer

FOR A CAUSE – Fred Picaso, along with daughter Jessica of Fort Stockton, came to town for a bake sale over the weekend. Proceeds will go to cancer research as the Picasos and others participate in the “Relay for Life” this weekend in Fort Stockton.

Snakers allege ‘harassment’

SEARCH OBJECT – Many reptile enthusiasts come to west Texas to see the gray banded kingsnake endemic only to this part of the world. A Sanderson Chamber of Commerce member complained this week that rigid enforcement of a state law against “hunting” on public highways is driving tourists – and the money they bring with them – away.

REUNION -- Billie McDonald and Jessie McClellan of Sanderson were among the 76 members of the McDonald family at a reunion last week in Leakey. Billie McDonald is the only surviving offspring of Terrell County pioneers Will and Rose McDonald and Jim and Addie Stout.
