BURSTING IN AIR – The Chamber of Commerce fireworks show at the Fourth of July observance in Sanderson Saturday brought to mind the “bombs bursting in air” in the lyrics to the National Anthem. Francis Scott Key saw the bombs over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812, which inspired him to pen the words for the Star Spangled Banner.

SANDERSON – Except for a couple of small “glitches,” the Fourth of July celebration was one of the most successful in recent memory Saturday.

In many ways, it resembled the highly successful Centennial celebration of 2005.

No official count was possible but the American Legion and Legion Auxiliary ran out of chicken early and pre-packaged setups not long after that as    hungry celebrants lined up for the annual barbecue.

Legion adjutant Bill Hawn said they fed 330 people before running out of food and had to turn about 40 away.

Both chicken and brisket were offered but the some 55 pounds of chicken sold out in the first half hour, he said.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with the turnout,” Hawn said. “It was all very well done, very well.”

Hawn said cooks included J.C. and Bobbie Hicks, Glenn Andrews, John Ed Robbins and Dean Autrey. Clyde Autrey collected money.

Albert and Sheri Thorn donated “all the ice” for the luncheon, Hawn said, something that was very helpful on a hot July day.

The temperature reached 93 degrees Saturday with an almost East-Texas-like humidity hovering around 80 percent, causing some discomfort during the day.

There was at least one minor case of heat exhaustion as people lined up for the luncheon and the fireworks display went off about 45 minutes before it was advertised.
