SANDERSON – Terrell County Commissioners took a first step in determining whether to build a new “convention center” using Venue Tax funds or to convert the old Kerr Mercantile building into such a facility.

At its regular meeting Monday, the County Commissioners Court agreed to hire Southwest Architects, Inc., of Fort Worth for $15,000 to “draft plans and designs” for the “new” convention center at Oak and Second.

County Judge Leo Smith said Leila Cash, representing a group of citizen in favor of restoring the Kerr building, had suggested the name of an architect for the county to consider to do a similar study of the Kerr building a block west of the proposed “new” site.

Smith said he would like to see the county pay for both architects and, if both projects are feasible, give the voters a chance to make the final determination.

Southwest Associate Justin S. Gilmore told the court his firm’s focus is on providing “quality” and making sure it stays “within the budget.”

He said Southwest has six projects currently under way, three of which are in Brewster County.

“We don’t mind coming a long way,” he said.

Southwest is the architect for the new law enforcement building in Marathon, an emergency response center in Terlingua and a fire station in Alpine.
