TOPLESS – The old Harvey’s Café, later known as the Little Green House, sports a mural on the east wall, now exposed to the elements. The building was to have been torn down to make room for a new “convention center” on the site but then it was decided it might have some value as part of the facility. Architects are currently studying this site and the old Kerr Mercantile a block east as possible convention center locations. The mural was painted by Harvey Rogers when he used the building as his café in the 1960s.

SANDERSON – The 27th annual St. James Festival Saturday and Sunday “was a success,” St. James member Tina Flores said this week. The benefit brought in nearly $10,000 for the church.

There were no candidates for St. James king and queen but the festival brought scores of visitors to the community.

There were mariachis, a silent auction, a bake sale, a roast beef lunch, a washer tournament, the annual softball tournament – with ten teams this year – and even bingo.

In the softball tournament, first place went to The X Team, made up of players from Del Rio and San Antonio. Each player received a festival t-shirt and a bat bag for their efforts.

In second place was The Garcia Team of Midland. Members of the team each got a t-shirt for his reward.

In third place was The Mix Crew made up of players from Iraan and Sheffield. They also walked away with brand new t-shirts.

Mariachi Aguila made the trip from Pecos, playing special requests, one made by Pascuala Falcon, while Tony Calzada sat nearby enjoying his pipe.

The silent auction offered items such as a 10-piece nativity set, a crock pot and western lamps.

Those lucky enough to holler “Bingo” may have won a set of towels, a 12 pack of cokes or maybe a gallon of salsa.

There was a cakewalk as well as other games.

The game of “washers” is becoming more and more popular. This year, the festival hosted a tournament and had 18 two-man teams partake.   Read more...
