BUS CLONE – The new Sanderson School “activity bus” retuned with a “clone” Tuesday, arriving at the Band Hall. The $150,247 Blue Bird bus acquired last year was at Blue Star Bus Sales in Lubbock for warranty work, correcting things all new vehicles need. At the same time, the old “OO,” closest to the camera, underwent some $18,000 in repairs and got a new paint job to match the new bus. Both can now be used for long-distance trips for sports and other school activities. The two buses, plus the mini-bus, No. 7, were driven home Tuesday.

SANDERSON – With the temperature in the mid 90s Monday, it may have been hard for some to recognize summer is almost over.

But anyone wandering by Eagle Stadium either in the morning or the evening this week got their first hint of fall with Eagle football 2009 in the air.

And for the players on the field, the hot sun was probably one of their worst enemies.

Two-a-day practices started Monday with workouts from 8 to 10 a.m. and again from 7 to 9 p.m.

“Two a days are off to a great start,” Head Coach Mark Dominguez told the News Leader. “We have 14 currently participating and expect one more coming in Monday.

“There are no individuals on this team,” he said when we asked to single out a player or two to watch. “The boys are all working well with each other and encouraging each other to do well, which is always a good thing.

“The boys are all doing as asked of the coaches and that’s always good,” Dominguez said. “We will have a better idea where we stand next week once we get in pads. Life is good right now.”

While Dominguez declined to name specific players, the popular magazine Dave Campbell’s 2009 Texas Football was not as reticent.

Campbell’s “quick take notes” lists returning starter and senior Ryan Rosas as preseason defensive MVP.

Key players to watch this season are Ryan, Jacob Benavidez, Darren Seidel and David Shoemaker, the magazine said.   Read more...

County Fair changes seen

SANDERSON – There could be in increase of 20 to 30 percent in the number of animals at the 31st Annual Terrell County Fair in January and the schedule could change to include moving the auction to coincide with a new dinner event.

The Fair Board met for its initial meeting Monday to begin mapping out the 2010 fair at a date to be determined.

County AgriLife Extension Agent Mark Carroll said the county fair is normally the last Saturday in January but it depends on the date of the Fort Worth Stock Show.

Carroll said the Fort Worth date had not been posted yet to its web site.

Last year, the annual fair disregarded a national recession and set a new record with the auction bringing in some $17,000, up from about $14,000 the year before.

There was discussion about making the 2010 fair a two-day event but Jon Tom Lowrance worried that the Terrell County Fair “is not big enough yet for two days.”    Read more...

KATIE-SIZED – John Pierce has a summer job caring for pets. He was spotted with Mom Sandy walking his charges including Katie Jahn’s miniature horse Rosie. Don’t let her size fool you. Rosie is full-grown. She’s just Katie sized. John will donate half of the money raised this summer to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

‘Bad cat’ meets its demise

I GET A KICK – Sanderson Eagle Ryan Rosas tried his hand – er, foot – at kicking during early two-a-day football practice this week. Holding the ball was David Bon. Ryan will not necessarily be the kicker this fall. Players were being tried in several positions as the team starts to take shape.

WATER’S FINE – After almost two weeks, the pool at Bicentennial Park is open again. A pump went out and the pool was closed while repairs were made. One-year-old Elia LaFleur enjoyed a splash this week at the first birthday party for Glen Anderson, Jr.

FAMILY TIME – Glen Anderson, Teja, Nichole and Glen, Jr., from left,  cooled off a little as they celebrated little Glen’s first birthday. The pool was closed for nearly two weeks due to a broken pump.

GOTCHA – A frequent complaint in Sanderson is about cross-country trucks speeding through town. Sgt. Bill Adams was spotted stopping one truck recently and deputies have patrolled US 90 through town on a fairly regular basis. They can’t catch them all but they appear to be trying.
