UP IN THE AIRIf it looks like some of the wheels were up in the air, so to speak, on this giant rig moving north out of Sanderson in Octo ber, you are not seeing things. Extra eight-wheel bogies were retracted, like landing gear on an airplane, for much of the journey to the Century Plant 37 miles north. They were lowered to spread the million-pound load when going over bridges giving the giant rig as many as 338 wheels. The scene is expected to be repeated next week.

SANDERSON – Terrell County Commissioners have “proposed” a tax rate for fiscal 2011 of 42.5 cents per $100 valuation, up from 37.38 cents in the current year, an amount which would bring in virtually the same revenue next year.

The increase was said to be needed to cope with decreasing valuations and the need for an even-bigger boost next year.

County Tax Assessor Blain Chriesman estimated the 42.5-cent rate, combined with sale tax receipts, would provide about $45,000 more than the $3 million in the current year.

In making the motion to propose 42.5 cents, Commissioner Kenn Norris said it was the “fiscally responsible thing to do.

“It’s not for this year but next year,” he said. “If we don’t raise it some this year and we continue to have a loss in property values, we might not be able to raise the rates enough next year.”

Norris said the action had “nothing to do” with the need for a convention center or other plans but was needed to keep next year’s court from having an untenable situation.

State law allows only for small percentage increases in a tax without facing a “rollback” election, giving voters the chance to oppose an increase.

Norris said the five-cent increase was “swapping pennies” to stave off problems later.

Bids for ‘center’ opened

HALF A LOAFWell, half a building, anyway. Terrell County Commissioners may decide to split a building to keep it in the budget. After bids were opened Monday, the county can get the west half of a proposed Convention Center, the right side in this picture, for less than the $1.027 in budget based on a projected balance in the venue fund. They hope to build it on a lot the county owns at Oak and Second in downtown Sanderson.
