OVERWEIGHTTodd Reynolds of Houston checked the alignment of the wheels on one of the more than 30 axles of a giant transporter. Reports the giant tank destined for the Century Plant 37 miles north of Sanderson was overweight delayed the move and crews weighed the million-pound beast late Tuesday – one axle at a time.

SANDERSON – Teachers and administrators here will get a raise of at least $910 in the new school year after action by the School Board Monday night.

The board approved a two-percent raise “from the midpoint” at a special meeting.

Superintendent Gary Hamilton also received a two-percent raise. The board took action on his compensation separately because he is under an individual contract with the board.

The board is facing a tight budget and has had to cut back in several areas. Giving a raise at this time took a lot of debate.

“You can’t afford not to at this time,” Business Manager Chriesman said. “This is your best chance. If we don’t move now, we will be way behind” in future years.

Because of uncertainty with the state facing a budget shortfall of as much as $18 billion in the next biennium, the district cannot count on help from the state in future years.

“Some districts don’t give a raise at all unless the state gives it,” Board President Ada Lee Robbins said.

Board Secretary Johnnie Couch said many people consider themselves lucky just to have a job in these tough times.

“A lot of people are not getting a raise but they still have a job,” he said of TCISD employees.

ALPINE – Rowena “Rena” Gallego will retire as director of Financial Assistance Tuesday, Aug. 31, ending a 32-year career at Sul Ross State University.

An Alpine native, she received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in office occupations in 1987 and a Master of Education in Counseling in 1995.

CENIZO NO MASThe iconic “Café Cenizo” restaurant at the Gage Hotel will re-open tomorrow, Aug. 28, under a new name. The new “Ranch 616 at the Gage” will feature a new menu as will the adjoining White Buffalo Bar. Several employees were let go during the transition but all have been given the chance to re-apply.

Transfer of tanks delayed

WEIGH IN PLEASEA giant rig carrying a million-pound tank to the SandRidge Energy-Oxy Petroleum Century Plant 37 miles north of Sanderson had to be reweighed this week. Crews from Barnhart Crane & Rigging of Houston put scales under the big truck and weighed it – each of its 32 axles at a time.

EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACEEmma Carrasco arranged her lunch before digging into her meal during lunch at the Bicentennial Park Pavilion this week. The grade school kids had picnic lunches while the cafeteria is being rebuilt.
