SANDERSON – The Sanderson High School Eagles redeemed themselves before home fans at Homecoming last Friday by “45ing” the visiting Grandfalls-Royalty Cowboys 69-24 at Eagle Stadium.

Wearing their brand-new black uniforms with orange numerals, the Eagles avenged a 46-0 defeat the week before at the hands of the Grady Wildcats.

The 45-point “mercy killing” last week came about a minute later than their defeat the week before, with 3:26 remaining on the third-quarter clock.

In six-man football, the game is over when one team is ahead by 45 points or more any time after halftime.

The Eagles took the opening kickoff before a nearly-packed Homecoming crowd, starting from their own 31-yard line.

Three long runs by senior Ryan Rosas, capped by a final eight yards for pay dirt, put the Eagles ahead with only 51 ticks used up in the game.

Senior Darren Seidel lined up for the points after but a high snap prevented his boot. Not to worry, though. Darren scampered around left end and put another point on the board.

In six-man football, a kick counts for two points after while a run or pass is good for one, just the reverse from its 11-man cousin.

The two teams battled it out for three more minutes and the Eagles seemed destined to score again, only to fumble in the end zone, giving the Cowboys the ball on their own 20.
