SANDERSON – In the debate over staffing of the county’s emergency medical staff, there has been concern the service would be discontinued but that is not at issue. The debate is essentially over staffing, pay and benefits for providers.
The EMT situation has been a hot topic for months with providers saying they are under staffed and under paid.
County Judge Leo Smith told the News Leader there had been talk about privatizing the service but he stressed that, in no case, would ambulances be dispatched from Fort Stockton or elsewhere.
If a private operator were chosen, he said, it would be required to base an ambulance in Sanderson.
“I would like to see the EMS being fully staffed and have better hours and better pay,” Intermediate EMT Abby Roberts said.
Intermediate EMT Leila Cash agreed. She has put together a financial plan but county commissioners said there were not enough funds at this time.
“The EMTs asked to double their salary even though Leila and Abby are quitting,” Smith said. “Their current wages are $23,000 and they are asking for $61,000."
The EMT staff is asking for two days on and four days off.
“The number we came up with to fully staff the EMS is nine total hired so the EMTs could have three people on duty, which would give everyone 48 hours on duty and 96 hours off,” Cash said. “That’s how it’s done in the other

MARFA – US Border Patrol agents seized 845 pounds of marijuana hidden in an auxiliary gas tank at the Highway 67 checkpoint south of here during an immigration check last week.

SWEETHEARTSAmong the honors at Homecoming last week were two more pairs of sweethearts. Band beau and sweetheart, top picture, were Jonathan Calzada and Kayla Fuéntez. Below, football sweetheart and beau were Julianna Larrinaga and Cordell Lawson. They were introduced at the pep rally before the ball game Friday.

FLOODING?Well, not quite. It rained some this week – about half an inch over four days. As usual, the intersection of Oak Street, aka Highway 90, at First Street had standing water in the street. The County is installing drainage ditches throughout town but this intersection seems to fill with water with even a small rainfall.

HOT SEAT – A sofa near the top of a pile of wood was one of the first things to ignite at the Sanderson High School Homecoming bonfire last week. The blaze in the field next to the county Road and Bridge yard could be seen for miles around.

OUTRIGGERCrews from Barnhart Crane & Rigging of Houston lowered “outrigger” wheels Wednesday morning to spread the load over the Big Canyon Bridge on US Highway 285. The crews moved the second of two large tanks to the SandRidge Energy-Oxy Petroleum “Century Plant,” 37 miles north of Sanderson. It took nearly 12 hours to reach the stop at 30-mile hill.

READY OR NOTA new field house at the east end of Sanderson Stadium should be ready this fall, hopefully before the current football season ends. The “good news” this week was that the water and sewer lines have been connected.

IT’S ELEMENTARYWork is still under way at Sanderson Elementary School under the Terrell County ISD $14 million bond issue. Meanwhile, students are “having fun” going to school in the old high school building where many of their parents and even grandparents went to school.

SANDERSON – The Sanderson High School varsity football team did not give the Homecoming crowd a “45” halftime victory Friday night.

They had to go 13 seconds into the third quarter before racking up enough points for the “Mercy Killing” rule mandated by Texas Six Man Football Association in which the game ends at any time from halftime on if one team is ahead by 45 or more points.

WHAT’S LEFT? – Paula Picaso, left, and Aurelia Galvan sold burritos to Mike Sanchez and Anna Martinez.  The ladies, among other senior moms, are selling burritos and homemade tortillas in support of Project Graduation.  They will be outside of Uncle’s Monday through Friday, until around 9 a.m.
