Staph infections spur rumors
SANDERSON – Minor staph infections among a few students
at Sanderson schools last week resulted in extensive sanitizing programs in the school but no serious illnesses.
They also spurred rumors around town that made the outbreak seem a lot more serious than it was.

SANDERSON – My son is autistic. Many people around town know this and accept him for who he is. Others assume there is something wrong
with him.
His dad and I think he is just misunderstood and are trying to encourage others to understand a
little more about what he is going through.

the school song last week. The bonfire and a parade that preceded it were key elements in a week-long Homecoming celebration.
SNIP – With a quick cut by a pair of giant scissors provided by the Chamber of Commerce, Shellie and Steve Martin officially launched
Cheli’s Restaurant Tuesday. It will open for business at 5 p.m. next Friday, Oct. 1. Looking on from left were Jordan Gausepohl, Bill
Loghry and Serapio Picaso.

LIKE FATHER – Border Patrol Agent Justin Millican of Marfa, left, was featured in a Page 1 Story in the Big Bend Sentinel last week.

and smugglers along the border.

CROWNING GLORY – Sanderson School Nurse Violita McDonald, left, who was Homecoming queen in 1997, crowned this year’s winners Friday.

were the climax of a week of Homecoming activities.
MARFA – US Border Patrol agents seized 845 pounds of marijuana hidden in an auxiliary gas tank at the Highway 67 checkpoint south
of here during an immigration check last week.

SWEETHEARTS – Among the honors at Homecoming last week were two more pairs of sweethearts. Band beau and
sweetheart, top picture, were Jonathan Calzada and Kayla Fuéntez. Below, football sweetheart and beau were Julianna Larrinaga and
Cordell Lawson. They were introduced at the pep rally before the ball game Friday.
FLOODING? – Well, not quite. It rained some this week – about half an inch over four days. As usual, the intersection of Oak Street,
aka Highway 90, at First Street had standing water in the street. The County is installing drainage ditches throughout town but this
intersection seems to fill with water with even a small rainfall.
HOT SEAT – A sofa near the top of a pile of wood was one of the first things to ignite at the Sanderson High School Homecoming bonfire
last week. The blaze in the field next to the county Road and Bridge yard could be seen for miles around.

OUTRIGGER – Crews from Barnhart Crane & Rigging of Houston lowered “outrigger” wheels Wednesday morning to
spread the load over the Big Canyon Bridge on US Highway 285. The crews moved the second of two large tanks to the SandRidge Energy-Oxy
Petroleum “Century Plant,” 37 miles north of Sanderson. It took nearly 12 hours to reach the stop at 30-mile hill.
READY OR NOT – A new field house at the east end of Sanderson Stadium should be ready this fall, hopefully before the current football

IT’S ELEMENTARY – Work is still under way at Sanderson Elementary School under the Terrell County ISD $14 million bond issue. Meanwhile,
students are “having fun” going to school in the old high school building where many of their parents and even grandparents went to
school.
Eagles ‘45’ Chargers
SANDERSON – The Sanderson High School varsity football team did not give the Homecoming crowd a “45” halftime victory Friday night.
They had to go 13 seconds into the third quarter before racking up enough points for the “Mercy Killing” rule mandated by Texas Six
Man Football Association in which the game ends at any time from halftime on if one team is ahead by 45 or more points.

EARLY SCORE – Jonathan Calzada, 11, put points on the scoreboard for the Sanderson Eagles on the first play
from scrimmage Friday. Teammate L.A. Galvan, 13, looked for someone to block. The Eagles “45d” the visiting El Paso Jesus Chapel before
a Homecoming crowd.
IN YOUR SON’S NAME – Eleven students and one adult gathered at the flagpole at the junior high school this week for a moment of prayer. See You at the Pole is and annual event in which students pray for their schools, their country, and in Sanderson the students prayed
that God help them be a better witness for Him.
