GAME STOPPERSanderson junior Cordell Lawson, 5, put a nail in the coffin of the Eagle’s victory over El Paso Bethel Academy last week. He intercepted a pass at the Knight four and stepped into the end zone, bringing the score to 54-8, enough for the 45-point “mercy killing.” Among those looking on was Eagle Darren Seidel, 58.

SANDERSON – The last major project in the $14 million bond issue for Terrell County Independent School District has finally gone to contract.

The School Board Monday awarded $1,347,518 in contracts for the field house to be built at the east end of Eagle Stadium, $1,152,518 to Mid-Tex Midland for the building and $195,000 to Honeywell for plumbing, electrical and heating, ventilating and air conditioning.

The Honeywell contract includes a 25-year warranty.

Mid-Tex was lowest of four bidders for the project. It includes a “roll rubber” floor in the weight room, the one alternate bid separately.

The board could choose between the roll rubber and rubber tile with the former just 2.5 percent more than the tile.

Architect Monte Hunter told the board the roll rubber was a better option, which normally costs much more than the tiles.

He said the roll rubber is much easier to keep clean because the tiles tend to “absorb” dirt.

The board first got bids for the field house in December but rejected the $1.7 million offer on a 7,748-square-foot field house and asked Hunter to scale back plans to reduce costs.

Hunter and Athletic Director Mark Dominguez reworked the plan to 5,095 square feet and the winning bid for the structure itself was $1.13 million.

Bids were opened early this month but action was deferred last week for further study.
