NEW CARThe News Leader happened to get a copy of this picture, circa 1920, of Ferguson Motor Company in downtown Sanderson. The man on the right is owner J.W. Ferguson. We could not get an ID on the other man. We borrowed the picture from County Commissioner Kenn Norris who now operates his real estate and antiques business from the same building.

MARATHON – Lee Roberts and The Shade Tree Cooks of Marathon took first place in the annual West Fest and Cabrito Cook Off at Post Park here Saturday.

A much smaller crowd gathered at Post Park than attended in previous years but there was a good turnout at the Friday night dance.

“The band played a variety of music and played the requests of the crowd,” said organizer Nancy Newsome. “There were many more people than what were expected for a free concert in Marathon.”

Newsome said the band, Marathon Man Horse, was a hit with dancers. There was a steak competition as well.

Second place in the cabrito event Saturday was the group Dutch all Overs of Fort Davis and The Left Overs took third.

By noon Saturday, the aroma of food cooking wafted through the popular recreation area south of here.

There were canoe races with young and old rowers. Cooking team members and families played washers. And there were raffles for lawn chairs, coolers, Blue Tooth, t-shirts and even a large gas grill.

Kinley Coyan of Sanderson showed off his flint napping skills while wife Megan displayed her jewelry and sons Kelton and Asa looked on.

Also in the group were Kinley’s mother Sheryl Bierschwale, Megan’s mother Debbie          Read more...

SANDERSON – The string is still unbroken. All five of the Sanderson High School Eagles football games this year have ended with the 45-point “Mercy rule,” the six-man-football directive that says the game is over any time after half if one team is ahead by 45 or more points.

And the Eagles have a two and three record with all games ending before regulation time ran out.     Read more...

RUNNING FEERankin back Kody Fee added some more points to the Red Raider scoreboard in the victory over the hometown Sanderson Eagles Friday. When Kody wasn’t running or catching a pass, he was kicking extra points.

Eagles take top three

CROSS COUNTRYThe Sanderson Eagle boys dominated the “Running with the Lions” cross country meet in Ozona Saturday. The team, from left, includes Darren Seidel, William Roberts, Joe Hopkins, Travis Roberts, Chris Marquez and Shawn Stegall.

CABRITO WINNERLee Roberts of Marathon and his Shade Tree Cooks took first place in the Cabrito Cook Off at West Fest Saturday. His concoction was a deep-fried delicacy that some said tasted like chicken fried steak.

DAWG GRANGERSCal Cavness, left, and Buddy Cavness of Dawg Grangers won first and third in the beans category at the West Fest Cook Off at Marathon Post Park Saturday. Two separate team members entered, thus the two awards.

CANOERSMary Katherine Elsner, left, and Kristen Cavness were the top canoers at West Fest Saturday. The pair paddled their way to victory to win dinner at Long Horn Steak House.

SHORT STOPSanderson senior Jacob Benavidez, 3, stopped Raider Kody Fee, 5, in his tracks Friday. Good thing, too. Kody racked up several points in the Rankin victory over Sanderson, running and kicking extra points.

STRIKE UP THE BANDFans say the Sanderson High School Band seems to get better each week. Band Director Eric Cooksey is in his second year in the job. The band had floundered in recent years but is on the mend with Cooksey’s work and some surprising young talent.

FOR THE BIRDSA flock of several hundred cattle egrets showed up at the Legion Field ball park in Sanderson this week. County Extension Agent Mark Carroll said the cattle egret feeds in relatively dry grassy habitats, often accompanying cattle or other large mammals. The adult cattle egret has few predators. This species removes ticks and flies from cattle. They are typically migratory birds and will stay in an area as long as food is available.

MENTORSSanderson High School Eagle football players are volunteering as “mentors” to elementary students again this year. Here, Robert Montalvo, left, and Jacob Benavidez provided some “big brother” help to some younger classmates.

Toler on board of ‘Friends’
