SANDERSON – Terrell County voters Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a $1.6 million bond issue designed solely to keep more money at home in the Terrell County Independent School District.

Under the state’s so-called “Robin Hood” finance scheme “Chapter 41” districts like TCISD, which are considered “property wealthy,” are required to “share” revenues with “property poor” districts.

In the current year, it has been estimated that TCISD will have to send as much as 82 cents of every tax dollar the district raises to other school districts.

But state law allows Chapter 41 districts to exempt money raised from “voter approved bonds” from the “recapture” requirement.

Voters in the county said yes to the bond issue 178 to 44, or 80 percent.

Terrell County voters split on the 11 state constitutional amendments, all of which carried statewide in unofficial returns at press time.

Proposition 1, which would authorize municipalities and counties to acquire buffer areas or open spaces adjacent to military installations, carried statewide by 52 percent but failed in Terrell County 100 to 96.

SANDERSON – County Judge Leo Smith kissed a doe goat Saturday. She never knew what hit her till Smith puckered up.

It was all part of the annual Halloween observance in Terrell County, called Fall Fest ’09 this year.

The sophomore class at Sanderson High School offered the “election” resulting in the smooch.

Regional races set tomorrow

SANDERSON – The entire Sanderson High School cross country teams, both boys and girls, will compete in the Regional meet starting at 1 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 7, at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock.

Both teams won first at the district meet Oct. 28 at Balmorhea.

Veterans Day next week

SANDERSON – Halloween was last week and attention quickly turns to Veterans Day next week.

As it does every year, the local observance will be highlighted with a program at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, in the High School Auditorium honoring all US service veterans.

Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it is usually observed on Nov. 11, the date World War I ended.

SANDERSON – The Sanderson Eagles are at home tonight in their final football game of the regular season and, in all probability, for the year.

“They will be playing for pride,” Head Coach Mark Dominguez said.

Unless the ball bounces exactly right tonight, the Eagles are probably out of the playoffs after they missed an opportunity at Dell City last week.

SANDERSON – Jessica Harkins’ kindergarten class at Sanderson Elementary took honors for the most kids present at the annual Book Fair Monday night.

There were parents reading to their little ones and books to be found for eager readers. There also were pencils, erasers, computer games and many other great gift ideas.

Pam Deaton, Dora Benavidez and Billy McDonald were school staff members who volunteered their time to help with the book fair.

Knife found after 63 years

ALPINE – “I   was flabbergasted,” former Boy Scout and now Professor of Geology Dr Julius Dasch said after Scout Master Ken Clarty called him out of the blue and told him he had his missing Boy Scout knife.

Dasch lost the knife in 1946.

FSA Grant OKd for fire truck

SANDERSON – Terrell County has accepted a grant for up to $155,000 from the Texas Forest Service for 90 percent funding of a new fire truck.

County Judge Leo Smith said the grant would allow the county to get a new 2,000-gallon tanker truck for about $172,000 by providing its ten- percent match.

AUSTIN – Three free taxpayer seminars have been scheduled throughout November at various locations across the state.

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs’ office presents the seminars to help new and existing business owners understand their state tax responsibilities.

GREAT LAKES, IL – Seaman First Class Isaac A. Nevarez has been promoted to commander of the Armed Drill Team for the Medic Division of the US Navy here.

Nevarez had four years of ROTC at Midland High, which qualified him for an E-3 rank upon entering the Navy.

He is the son of John and Christina Nevarez of Midland. Grandparents are Rosario and Joe Fuentez and Alfred and Thelma Calzada of Sanderson. Nevarez is great grandson of Polo Calzada, also of Sanderson.

Isaac and twin brother Joachim joined our military forces recently. Joachim is in the US Marine Corps.  

BAD CALLAmber Bon and Robert Montalvo ventured out trick-or-treating as “blind referees” at Halloween last week. Also seen on the streets were ghosts, goblins and even a few fairies.

Last Eagle game ‘for pride’

ALL ALONESanderson Eagle Cordell Lawson, 5, was  ”all alone” in the end zone in this play last week at Dell City. It wasn’t enough, though. The Eagles lost 58-44 to the Cougars and are probably out of the running for the playoffs.

SIX POINTSSanderson Eagle senior Darren Seidel contributed three touchdowns and seven extra points last week but it wasn’t enough. The Dell City Cougars beat the Eagles at Dell City 58-44 in spite of Darren’s 25 points.

Harkins class tops Book Fair

POSTER PRIZEHunter Truesdell won a poster drawing at Sanderson Elementary School’s annual Book Fair Monday. Profits from book sales will provide books and “fun” activities for children.

School construction end seen next year

WALLS UPGlen Anderson, foreman for West Tex of Midland, said dry walls are up and finishing touches are under way on the Sanderson High School Vocational Building. It is part of a $14 million school bond issue that should be completed by the end of the school year.

GET ME DOWNA goat was spotted halfway up a cliff behind the News Leader office in Sanderson for two days this week. It apparently didn’t know how to extricate itself from the predicament. A game warden said he would “check it out.” 

TRICK OR TREATCameden Lulan and Giana Gonzales showed off their bags of Halloween treats last week. The Marathon Public Library passed out 38 treat bags Friday to trick-or-treaters visiting the library.

NOT SO RAGGEDCorina Grace Castro dressed as Raggedy Ann for the Fall Fest costume contest in Sanderson Saturday. Corina is the daughter of JoDale Castro.

PUMPKIN ARTNichole and Nickolas Cardoza decorated paper pumpkins for Halloween last week in the toddler program at Marathon Public Library. The library has a toddler story time every Wednesday and last week, Jackie Boyd read “Corduroy Trick or Treat” by Don Freeman.
