SANDERSON – While Sen. Barack Obama coasted to an easy victory to the office of President Tuesday, Terrell County and Texas went the other way.

Statewide, Texas voters chose the ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin over Obama and Joe Biden by 55.38 percent to 43.65 percent with eight other candidates sharing less than a percent between them.

Terrell County went 62 percent for McCain/Palin, though Obama’s party narrowly carried the straight party vote with 91 votes to 87 for the Republican ticket and three straight Libertarian votes.

Down the ticket, Republican Sen. John Cornyn easily won re-election over challenger Democrat Rick Norriega by 54.8 percent statewide and 59 percent in Terrell County.

Democrat US Rep. Ciro Rodriguez held onto his 23rd District seat with 55.76 percent of the vote district wide. But Republican Challenger Lyle Larson beat Rodriguez in Terrell County with 54 percent of the vote.

Democrat State Rep. Pete Gallego of Alpine won re-election to District 74 over Thomas C. Kincaid, Jr., of Fort Stockton with 64.18 percent of the total.

Gallego also carried Terrell County with 60 percent of the vote.

In the 63rd Judicial District, Democrat, Enrique “Henry” Fernandez outpaced challenger Jacques “Jack” De La Mota with 61.9 percent and 58 percent in Terrell County.      Read more...

McCain wins Terrell vote

SANDERSON – The Sanderson Eagles are district champions. The boys in orange and black “45d” the visiting Dell City Cougars 52-0 at halftime Friday to move into the playoffs.

The Eagles will be off for the next two weeks. Head Coach Mark Dominguez said he tried to find a game tonight to replace the one with Marathon, which was unable to field a team this year.     Read more...

THAT’S ALL – Eagle Ryan Rosas, 23, stopped forward progress for Dell City Cougar Miguel Galvan, 22, Friday. The Eagles stopped the Cougars all night, or at least until the 45-point “mercy” rule at halftime, shutting out the visitors 52-0.

Runners to compete at region

GIRLS TEAM – The Sanderson Eagles Cross Country Girls team advanced to the Regional Track meet tomorrow, Nov. 8, at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock. They finished second while the boys team placed first at the district meet last week in Balmorhea. YABBA DABBA DOO – Ray Shoemaker as Fred Flintstone was the overall winner of the costume contest during the Halloween Fall Festival Saturday. Terrell County ISD coordinated the activities Saturday on the Courthouse Lawn and the practice field at the Band Hall.

WHO'S THAT? – From Indiana Jones, portrayed by four year old Noel Carrasco to Steve Urkel, who is really Mikey Shoemaker.  Characters were out in full force last weekend at the Halloween Festival.  Both boys won first place for their divisions.

ROYAL COURT – Luke Carroll was the Palace Guard, twin sister Lauryn was the queen and Taryn Mitchell was the jester at the Halloween Fall Festival Saturday. They took first for the second and third grade category.

TO GRANDMA’S HOUSE – Emily, aka Red Riding Hood, Jacob, as the big bad wolf and Nina, aka Granny came calling through the woods of Brady to Grandma Lupe Ponce’s house for Halloween.  The Delafuente children belong to Cathy & Sam Delafuente of Brady.

I WON’T GROW UP – So said Peter Pan, AKA Jimmy Rapp who, with Juliana Castro as Tinkerbell, won the high school category at Saturday’s costume contest. It was all part of Terrell County ISD’s fall festival at the Courthouse Square and the school’s band hall.

DOO WHAP – Eli Montalvo was a “50s Girl” at the Halloween Fall Festival Saturday in Sanderson. She is the daughter of Marco Montalvo and Johnnie Ann Sandifer.

LIL’ BO PEEP – Very little, that is. Ava Rose Chapoy was so attired at the Halloween Fall Festival Saturday. She’s the daughter of Alyssa Chapoy.

YOUNG RUNNERS – Five Sanderson boys ran last week in the Sul Ross Homecoming 5K walk/run in Alpine last week. They are, from left, Jesse Roberts, Taylor Roberts, Travis Roberts, Jimmy Rapp and Shawn Stegall.

JAILED – Sheriff Clint McDonald found himself in jail Saturday but it was for a good cause. Sanderson Elementary School fifth graders raised funds at the Fall Festival by charging people $1 to put someone in jail and $2 to get out. McDonald was jailed by, from left, Anthony Fuéntez, Luke Carroll and Mason Blackmon.

ON STAGE – An impromptu stage was set up at Kray Flats arroyo over the weekend near Terlingua. The Annual Terlingua Chile Cook Off brought hundreds of “chile heads” to South County for a weekend of hot red and high jinks.

Model As pass through

CHILI FACE – Larry Thomas of Seguin was just another chile face at the annual Terlingua Chile Cook Off Saturday. Terlingua has more characters per square inch than just about anyplace. And they multiply every November when the Cook Off is in town.

LOST LOCKS – Aundria Hopkins, 10, gave up several inches of her hair to donate to the Locks of Love Foundation Saturday. The daughter of Annette and Robert Harris of Sanderson and James Hopkins, donated the locks to Tiffany Harrington, daughter of Bob and Stephanie Harrington. Stephanie and children are living in Dallas with family while Tiffany is undergoing treatments. Bob will transfer to Dallas soon. Missy Escamilla cut Aundria’s hair.

‘Social’ totals $14,000

SANDERSON – The Sanderson High School freshman class was more than $600 richer Saturday after watching the superintendent of schools kiss a pig.

Superintendent Gary Hamilton vied with Sheriff Clint McDonald and teachers Becky Norris, Beverly Choate and Suzie Grusendorf to see who could raise the most money.     Read more...

KISS A PIG – Sanderson School Superintendent Gary Hamilton grimaced before his task of kissing a pig at the school’s Halloween event Saturday. People “voted” for Hamilton over four other contestants by putting nearly $400 in a jar with his name. The event raised more than $600 for the freshman class. Holding the “kissee” was Carver Tate.

SANDERSON – People stopping at Town & Country convenience store or RoundHouse Café Sunday got a peak back in time – some 80 years back.

PASSING THROUGH – Nancy and Larry McCormick of Georgetown stood beside their Model A Ford at Sanderson’s Town & Country convenience story Sunday. They were part of a convoy of nine antique Fords passing through on the way to Big Bend, Alpine and Fort Davis.

NEW TOY A new “All American Blue Bird” over-the-road activity bus was seen around town yesterday, Nov. 6. The Terrell County ISD bought the vehicle from Blue Star Bus Sales of Lubbock for long trips, not only for football teams but UIL, band and any other school activities in which long drives are required. School officials and students were given rides in the new toy.

FOOTBALL AUTHOR – Sul Ross State University graduate Mike Flynt returned to campus during Homecoming last week and signed copies of his book "The Senior." Getting his autograph was Mary Beth Nicholson of Fort Worth. Flynt, 60, made national news last year when he returned to Lobo football action after a 36-year absence.
