SANDERSON – Thanksgiving Day means many things to many people, from turkey and dressing to football to the more reflective giving of thanks to your Creator, no matter how you visualize Him, for your many blessings.

It started 372 years ago in a frigid camp at Plymouth,MA, after the one of the first harvests in a new world.

The new settlers were thankful of their blessings in surviving life in a very harsh new environment.

Thanksgiving came in many forms in Sanderson this week, from a dinner for veterans at Legion Hall to dinner for seniors at the High School Cafeteria to shooting at targets to win a turkey at the annual Rio Grande Rifle Club’s Turkey Shoot.

The Clarence B. Mulkey American Legion Post 160 hosted 63 veterans and family members for turkey, ham and all the trimmings at Legion Hall the week before the actual date, Thursday, Nov. 19.

Members of the Legion made a formal presentation and then guests dug into the food provided by volunteers.

Cooks included Lea Hawn, Nancy Henderson, Bobbie Hicks, Carol Crumbley, Henry Beth Hogg, Sherry Autrey, Amy Carman, Margaret Farley, Ada Lee Robbins, Barbara Stewart and Dotsie Chriesman.

The next day, parents gathered with their students in the Sanderson High School cafeteria for all the traditional Thanksgiving eats.

THE REASONNo “political correctness” here. The News Leader displays the message, “Jesus is the reason for the season.” “It’s Christmas, which celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ,” Publisher Jim Street said. “If you are not a Christian, that does not change the person honored with the holiday. Efforts to eliminate ‘Christ’ from ‘Christmas’ misinterpret the First Amendment to the US Constitution.”
